The Shenzhen Institute of Artificial Intelligence and Robotics for Society (AIRS) was jointly established by the Shenzhen Municipal Government, the Chinese University of Hong Kong, Shenzhen (CUHK-Shenzhen), and several other leading global institutions in the field of artificial intelligence and robotics (AIR). As one of the top 10 fundamental research institutes and a key innovation platform in AIR in Shenzhen, AIRS has been committed to advancing cutting-edge AI technologies and translating research outcomes into capabilities that meet industrial needs. With its focus spanning multiple fields, including multi-scale luminal interventional surgical robots, heterogeneous multi-robot agile collaboration systems, and AI-driven smart and low-carbon initiatives, AIRS has published more than 1,200 high-quality papers in leading journals, such as Nature, Nature Communications, and Science Advances, as well as at international conferences. In intellectual property and technology leadership, AIRS has filed more than 500 patent applications and led or participated in the development of 13 national and local standards. The institute has also established a comprehensive research infrastructure, including 3 provincial research platforms, 6 municipal public research platforms, 17 joint laboratories, and 1 concept validation center. AIRS has over 280 employees, among whom 22% are recognized as high-caliber talents at the national, provincial and municipal levels, 48% are engineering application professionals. The institute is home to two academicians, four IEEE Fellows, and five scientists ranked among the world’s top 2%. Notably, Academician Yangsheng Xu—founding President of CUHK-Shenzhen, CAE Member, NAE Member, and IEEE Fellow—is a globally renowned expert in artificial intelligence and robotics.
